Who doesn’t love a Big Mac right from the fast cooks at McDonald’s? I haven’t had one in YEARS but let me tell you I know that distinct taste and will never forget it. Now, what if we could capture that wonderful taste in a salad? Well, that’s just what the Trim Healthy Mama (THM) sisters have done. You can find the recipe in their cookbook but I have tweaked it and made it into a jar salad. This is so easy and portable. Prep them all up in one day and you are set with good healthy lunches all week.
Yes, I do eat a jar salad almost every day for lunch. It’s a great way to get LOTS of veggies in and I feel good about eating them. They are also super filling. Each week I try a different kind so I still have lots of variety. I absolutely LOVE them! I also love that although I have to make them they are ready to go as soon as I am!
Big Mac Jar Salad
You can find the original recipe for this salad on page 181 in the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook. Now with respect to these wonderful ladies who have transformed my life and many others I can’t give the exact details of the recipe. You should definitely get the cookbook though it’s really great. What I can tell you is how I made this into a jar salad and also give you some other options for making it even if you do not have the cookbook.
Jar Salad Version
First, up the recipe uses a homemade THMified thousand island style dressing. If you are not following the Trim Healthy Mama (THM) plan you can definitely just use regular Thousand Island dressing. To my THM Friends who are following the plan (but do not have the cookbook yet) you could try this on plan homemade dressing. If you have the book just follow their directions to make up a batch of dressing. This is the first thing you want to layer in your jar.
Next up add in your favorite big mac burger toppings. I did pickles, tomatoes, and a little cheese. You could also add onions or whatever else you might like. Put these in on top of the dressing. The last thing you add before the lettuce is the ground meat. I tried to leave my meat chunky…so that it didn’t get lost in my salad. When everything is in stuff that jar full of lettuce.
If you are following the recipe from the book I would recommend seasoning the meat as they list. I don’t love onions so I did leave those out but I’m sure they would be great too.

New Way To Store
I’ve been making jar salads for a long time now and they easily last a week but last week someone told me there is an attachment for their vacuum sealer for jar lids. This keeps them fresh up to TWO weeks. I had to have one to try. I bought this attachment and handheld machine and I cannot wait to try it! If you have one PLEASE share your results with us! How long do they stay fresh?
